ESPN, Inc. fully Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, Inc., cable television sports broadcasting network that is with its headquarters within Bristol, Conn. It was founded in 1979, and is one of the most popular television networks across the United States. Its success engendered additional ESPN networks, including an international sports network.

New England sports announcer William Rasmussen founded ESPN to broadcast New England Whalers hockey matches and University of Connecticut sporting events. It was bought from the Getty Oil Company before it began broadcasting in 1979, which was the year that it signed large advertising contracts. It was then transferred by ABC, Inc., and three years later, it began the broadcast of National Football League games on Sundays. Although it was a cable channel, ESPN competed with the established networks in the production of broadcasts of live sports. In 1990, it offered $400 million Major League Baseball to broadcast 175 games per year during four seasons. National Hockey League games, football games and college basketball that included bowl and all-star games and bowling golf, martial arts, golf tennis and lacrosse games included among more than 65 sporting events that were broadcast on ESPN that broadcast throughout the day.

ESPN began to distribute programs for sports outside of the United States in 1983, that led to the establishment of ESPN International five years after. ESPN International broadcast regional sports programming, including cricket played in India as well as association soccer (soccer) throughout Latin America, in addition to sports events across and around the United States. In the early 1990s, ESPN created a radio-based sports network, and later included cable networks, such as ESPN2, ESPNEWS, and ESPN Classic, featuring rebroadcasts of old sporting events as well as the sports web site as well as ESPN The Magazine and also launched an array of restaurants with a sports theme. The company experienced substantial growth during the course of the millennium. ESPN made its debut in its first European marketplace in the year 2002, with the release of a edition called ESPN Classic and began ESPNU which featured college sports in 2005.
